a new garden!

This year I used an old flower bed for a garden at my house. I was not sure if I was able to keep a garden alive and did not want to til up grass if it would just die. so i took about a foot of old dirt out of the flower bed and refilled it with better dirt and planted my garden.

From seeds I planted:
Green Beans
Cilantro
Parsley
Mint
Basil
Dill
Oregano

Due to my lack of knowledge of what my stuff would look like i waited to weed my garden. when i finally did weed the weeds had taken over. i lost my mint to my hand thinking it was a weed, the oregano was stunted by the shade of the weed and i do not think it will recover and the same is true for my dill. i reseeded some dill but it may have been too late. the parsley is starting to perk back up :)

I also planted something bought prestarted at a green house.
4 early girl tomato plants
4 pickling cucumbers
3 super chilis (little red ones)
3 long chili plants

i also planted 6 cloves of garlic!!!

so far i have a half gallon of tomatoes waiting to be turned into salsa( i freeze them til i have enough)

i have a quart and a pint of pickles canned. and have eaten 3 cucumbers.

i transplanted chives and have had multiple harvests.

my green onions planted from seed died.... :(

so i am planning for next year and very excited. i am thinking a 20'x10' garden should be very sufficient....maybe. also i will still be able to use my flower bed for small stuff that does not need total sun. right now it gets half day and i think my garden would be better with more.

so now i am trying to plan a garden, what to plant. i need more cucumbers and tomatoes. i found on ebay you can get 22 packs of seeds for 19 bucks!!! heirloom seeds even!

i want to start all my seeds at least 8 weeks ahead of time in a small green house. i saw one at tractor supply that was the size of a mcds tray and held 36 peet thingies!!! more cost effective than buying all prestarted plants.

should i plant corn? potatoes? onion?

im not sure what i can plant because it has to be stored some how?

  1. You can start the seeds in the tray thing. That is how we started all our tomato plants. They took over the craft room. It's a cheap way to do plants.

Do you have an area in your house you could set them? Maybe on top of your drier?
